Sussex Playwrights' Club
Constance Cox Play Competition 2013

We have renamed our annual competition the Constance Cox Play Competition. This year we are inviting entries for a stage play on any theme, up to 60 minutes in length and with a maximum of six characters.

  • First prize: £250 plus a reading of the play at a club meeting
  • Second prize: £125 plus a reading of the play at a club meeting
  • Third prize: £50 plus a reading of the play at a club meeting

Plays submitted must not have been previously staged, given a public reading, or published. The deadline for entries is 30 November 2013. Winners will be announced on 14 April 2014.

The entry fee is £7. SPC members have one free entry. Play scripts should be submitted under a pseudonym, accompanied by a sealed envelope with the writer's name, address and contact details and sent to: Neil McKellar, 17 Overhill Way, Patcham, Brighton, BN1 8WP, UK.

General Rules

  1. All plays submitted must be a maximum of 60 minutes in length.
  2. Plays must be written for the stage and may have no more than six characters in total.
  3. There are no scene restrictions.
  4. Plays must be the original work of the submitting writer (which excludes adaptations). Plays may not be submitted by an agent or on behalf of the writer.
  5. Plays must not have been performed or published. Plays that have received a rehearsed reading as part of their development are acceptable.
  6. Plays must be received by the deadline of 30 November 2013. Any submissions received after this date will not be considered in the competition.
  7. All submissions must be accompanied by a cheque for the competition entry fee of £7 UK sterling. Current SPC members have one free entry. Entries must be posted to Neil McKellar, 17 Overhill Way, Patcham, Brighton, BN1 8WP, UK.
  8. Play scripts must be submitted under a pseudonym. The writer should include a sealed envelope containing their contact details, name of the play and a brief biography. The outside of the envelope should be clearly marked with the play title and their pseudonym only.
  9. Plays must be written in English.

 

New Venture Theatre & Sussex Playwrights' Club
10-Minute Play Competition 2013

Following the successful 10-Minute Play Competitions in 2010 & 2012, New Venture Theatre and Sussex Playwrights have joined forces again.

Submissions are welcomed from anyone and anywhere. The closing deadline is 13 July 2013. There is a £5 entry fee for all submissions and any writer is limited to submitting a maximum of three plays.

A shortlist of up to eight plays will be selected for production by the New Venture Theatre for seven performances between 6 and 14 December 2013. After each performance the audience will have the opportunity to vote on their preferred plays: this will result in an overall winner of the competition, which will be announced after the performance on Saturday 14 December.

General Rules

  1. All plays submitted must be a maximum of 10 minutes in length. They should also not be shorter than five minutes.
  2. Plays must be written for the stage and may have no more than three characters in total - this includes non-speaking and off-stage interacting characters. Monologues are also excluded.
  3. Plays should have minimal set and props.
  4. Plays must be the original work of the submitting writer (which excludes adaptations). Plays may not be submitted by an agent or on behalf of the writer.
  5. Plays must not have been performed or published. Plays that have received a rehearsed reading as part of their development are acceptable.
  6. Plays must be received by the deadline of midnight on 13 July 2013. Any submissions received after this date will not be considered in the competition.
  7. Submission of a play is taken as the granting of a rights licence to produce the play, at no cost, as part of the competition - see competition prize section. Apart from this the copyright remains with the writer.
  8. All submissions must be accompanied by the appropriate competition entry fee - see submission section.
  9. Writers may submit a maximum of three plays.
  10. Plays must be written in English.

Submissions

  1. All plays submitted may be in hard copy or electronic.
  2. All plays must have a title page displaying the play title and the writer's pseudonym.
  3. Each submission must be accompanied by a payment of £5 entry fee for the competition - see below.
  4. Plays should be professionally set out, double-spaced and hard copies attached by a single staple in the top left-hand corner only. No binders or other fixings please.
  5. If hard copy: two copies of each play must be submitted.
  6. If electronic: .doc .rtf or .pdf formats only will be accepted.
  7. The writer should submit a sealed envelope containing their contact details, name of the play and a brief biography. The outside of the envelope should be clearly marked with the play title and their pseudonym only. This information should be included in the accompanying email for electronic copies.
    1. For hard copies this must be enclosed with the script - cheques are preferable.
    2. For electronic submissions payment can be made by posted cheque - please include details of the play and both real name and pseudonym. Alternatively payment can be made by bank transfer to the account listed below. Please ensure you include the required reference - without this your payment may be untraceable.
  8. We are unable to return your scripts so please do not send the original hard copy.
  9. If you wish to receive confirmation of receipt enclose a stamped addressed postcard - please use your pseudonym on this postcard. For electronic submissions you will be emailed to confirm receipt.

Competition Prize

  1. All submissions will be read by our judging panel and a shortlist of up to eight will be selected for production.
  2. Details of the plays selected for production will be published on the New Venture Theatre and Sussex Playwrights' Club websites and their writers will be advised during August 2013.
  3. These plays will be produced at the New Venture Theatre in the 60-seat Studio theatre for eight performances during the week 6 to 14 December 2013.
  4. After each performance the audience will be asked to vote on the plays they have seen.
  5. On the last night the winning play will be announced from the audience votes.
  6. The winning writers will be invited to attend the final performance on Saturday 14 December. Due to the size of the theatre we can only provide writers with one complimentary ticket each.
  7. The organisers reserve the right to change any of the above in the event of problems beyond their control that may cause the performances to be detrimental to the reputation of the writers and/or organisations.
